The coastal extension of Marbella is made up of golden sandy beaches that are perfect for sunbathing before taking a cooling dip in the calm Mediterranean Sea. With the briny waters lapping on the gently sloping shore, swaying palms and spectacular views, the scene would appear to present a wonderful snapshot of nature at its best—but don’t be fooled, in reality a lot of hard work and many man hours have gone into making Marbella’s beaches so attractive.
Of course Mother Nature has set the beautiful framework, but man has applied the finishing touches to ensure holidaymakers have the perfect experience and this is much appreciated by visitors and locals alike now the warmer weather has arrived.
Work on Marbella’s beaches—including those of Puerto Banús—started after the last of the winter rains and continued until the first week of June in order to ensure their pristine condition in time for the peak tourist season. The most visible of these efforts was the laying down of thousands of cubic metres of sand along several kilometres of coastline to replenish beaches that had been eroded by winter storms. The sand used came from a variety of sources, including river mouths in need of dredging and off-shore sand banks. Not only is this work needed to ensure excellent sandy beaches for tourists, but it is environmentally imperative too in order to protect rare marine and river habitats from the effects of silting.
Once the beaches were replenished the next stage was to smooth and clean the sand using specialist equipment—this is an ongoing process that will continue on a daily basis throughout the summer to ensure the cleanliness and safety of Marbella’s beaches.
Also maintained and upgraded in time for the summer season have been facilities such as showers, public lavatories, changing rooms, litter bins and paths, including many kilometres of seafront walkway. Together with the facilities provided by the numerous beach bars of Marbella—many of which have also been spruced up through the winter months—the works undertaken by the town council ensure the high standards demanded by visitors to Marbella are maintained.
