The luxury marina of Puerto Banús changed the face and appeal of Marbella as an international jet-set destination. Indeed, since its opening in 1970 this marina and the surrounding areas that now carry its name have gone on to add to the reputation of Marbella around the world. Adding the name Puerto Banús to other resorts that are directly associated with the glamour and excitement of the Mediterranean.

A vision for Marbella
The marina of Puerto Banús was the brainchild of José Banús, a well-connected property developer from Madrid who fell in love with Marbella and ultimately became responsible for one of its most famous icons of luxury. Having studied a great many architectural proposals, he opted for the captivating design of Swiss-born Noldi Schreck and Marcos Sainz, the Mexican architect who was to make a name for himself as the person responsible for much of Puerto Banús’s design.

The original proposal put forward by the pair was highly creative and ambitious, including such features as a central canal flanked by shops and cafés. But José Banús wanted a more traditionally Spanish-Mediterranean ambience and reigned in the creativity of the architects somewhat. Who knows if Puerto Banús would have been even more exciting with canals, but what we do know is that the marina completed in 1970 proved an instant hit.

Banús envisioned the port – whose grand opening was attended by the likes of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, Hugh Hefner and the Aga Khan – not just as a luxury yacht marina where the owners of the finest vessels could congregate, but also a refined spot where they could socialise, dine, shop and dance the night away in style. This is exactly what happened, and the fact that famous faces such as Sean Connery, James Hunt and Princess Caroline were frequently spotted here, added to the international fame and allure of Puerto Banús.

Before long the marina became an integral part of Marbella, and to this day Puerto Banús remains a glamour spot where celebrities and the rich and famous like to visit. To the luxury restaurants, cafés, nightclubs, boutiques and luxury brand outlets have been added the elements that make up the newer parts of Puerto Banús – the Marina Banus shopping centre, the El Corte Inglés department store, Ocean Club, the cinema and luxury apartment complexes.

The finest Puerto Banús apartments can be found in urbanisations such as Playas del Duque, Ventura del Mar, Los Granados, Grey d’Albion, Medina Garden, Andalucia del Mar, Las Gaviotas, El Embrujo Playa, El Embrujo Banus, Bahia de Banus, Mimosas Beach Gardens, Casa Nova Puerto Banús and Malibu.
